Biography

Fujimori Shizuo (藤森静雄, 1891–1943) was a Japanese printmaker associated with the early sosaku-hanga (creative prints) movement. Born in 1891, Fujimori was active during the formative decades of the movement and contributed to its development through his participation in sosaku-hanga exhibitions and publications.

Fujimori worked primarily in black and white, creating woodblock prints characterized by bold contrasts and expressive carving. His prints often depicted landscapes and scenes of daily life, rendered with the strong graphic qualities that black-and-white woodblock printing naturally affords. He embraced the sosaku-hanga principle of designing, carving, and printing his own works, and his prints reflect the movement's emphasis on direct artistic expression through the woodblock medium.

His career coincided with a difficult period in Japanese history, and his death in 1943 at the age of fifty-two came during the height of World War II, which had severely disrupted Japan's artistic communities. Fujimori's output was modest, and his work is rarely seen on the market today. However, his participation in the early sosaku-hanga movement places him among the generation of artists who helped establish the foundations upon which the movement's later international success was built.
