Description
This print, one of two works Fujimori titled July, likely depicts a summer subject characteristic of the month's heat and atmosphere in Tokyo or its surroundings — possibly a river scene, festival imagery, or the play of afternoon light. July in Japan falls within the most humid weeks of summer, and printmakers of the Taisho and early Showa periods often used the month as a framing device for subjects including fireworks, bamboo groves, and the Sumida River. Without further distinguishing features, this print may differ from the other July composition in viewpoint, dominant color, or subject focus. As a [sosaku-hanga](/glossary/sosaku-hanga) work, the carving and printing would have been executed entirely by Fujimori, allowing direct translation of his hand into the final impression.
