John Amoss

John Amoss (born 1963) is an American printmaker based in Gainesville, Georgia, known for his work in moku hanga, the traditional Japanese water-based woodblock technique. He earned a BFA in Illustration (1987) and an MFA in Printmaking (2005), both from the University of Georgia, and served as a professor and past department head at the University of North Georgia, where he taught from 2005 until 2023 and holds the title of Professor Emeritus. Before turning to full-time teaching he worked for years as a newsroom artist at the Atlanta Journal-Constitution and ran his own illustration studio.

Amoss has been making woodblock prints and teaching printmaking for more than twenty-five years, working under the studio name Tanuki Prints. Though his formal training was in the United States, he has also worked as a guest printmaker in Tokyo, and he is well regarded among moku hanga practitioners for his technical command of the process. One of his major projects is a series of landscape woodblock prints depicting scenes from the Appalachian Trail, which he thru-hiked in its entirety in 1980. His prints have been exhibited across North America, Europe, Asia, Oceania, and Africa, have won national and international awards, and are held in collections around the world.
