Description
Harpers Ferry, West Virginia, sits at the confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers, a historically significant site the Appalachian Trail passes through at relatively low elevation. Unlike the summit compositions that dominate this series, a Harpers Ferry print would more likely emphasize river water, the town's 19th-century stone structures, and the surrounding hillsides. Printed in mokuhanga on [washi](/glossary/washi), the river surfaces could be rendered through carefully registered gradations, while the tree-covered bluffs above the town offer opportunities for layered green and grey tones. The combination of architectural and natural elements within a single composition marks this print as distinct within the series.
