Description
Springer Mountain in Georgia is the southern terminus of the Appalachian Trail, a forested summit in the Blue Ridge Mountains from which the trail's 2,190-mile route originates. Unlike the bare or rocky summits elsewhere in the Appalachians, Springer is densely wooded, its summit marked only by a plaque and a small rocky outcrop. A mokuhanga rendering would face the compositional challenge of an unphotogenic landmark — the meaning resides in geography rather than spectacle. Amoss likely resolves this through the surrounding forest's density and seasonal character, using layered pigments on [washi](/glossary/washi) to render the close, enveloping quality of Southern Appalachian woodland. As the series' conceptual starting point, Springer Mountain establishes the documentary ambition of the entire project.
