Description
Before the Dawn (2020), acrylic on canvas by Asako Iwasawa, depicts a dense, close-up arrangement of morning-glory-like blossoms in shades of blue, teal, and white with pale yellow centers, set among green foliage and vine tendrils against a dark navy-black background. Interspersed among the flowers are two large seed-pod or bud forms rendered in yellow-green with red and black interior markings, one with a slender curling tendril. The composition is flattened and stylized with hard-edged, faceted color blocks rather than naturalistic shading, and a narrow strip of pale blue sky appears along the top edge.
