Description
This composition depicts a street-level view of a barber's shop at Koyasuhama, a coastal locality on Yokohama Bay in Kanagawa Prefecture. [Shin-hanga](/glossary/shin-hanga) townscape subjects frequently focused on the interplay between commercial architecture and atmospheric conditions — lantern light spilling onto wet pavement, reflections on shop curtains, or the diffuse glow of interior lighting against dusk or evening skies. Ishiwata likely rendered the noren curtain and signage of the shop with close attention to the textures of wood and fabric, while [bokashi](/glossary/bokashi) gradations in the sky establish time of day and mood. The coastal setting at Koyasuhama would have allowed the inclusion of maritime references — boats, nets, or the distant shoreline — situating an ordinary commercial subject within a recognizable geographic locale. The vertical [oban](/glossary/oban) format typical of shin-hanga landscapes accommodates both the foreground architectural detail and the atmospheric background within a single unified composition.
