A woman from the world of the Genji — the Heian-era tale of aesthetic refinement and romantic tragedy — is rendered in Karhu's 1981 print with the flowing robes and downcast gaze that belong to classical Japanese figural imagery. Karhu returned occasionally to historical figural subjects throughout his career, and the Genji provided a particularly rich source — its world of courtly beauty and melancholy aligning naturally with the wistful atmospheric quality of his architectural prints. The "B" designation suggests this is part of a series of Genji women.
