Karasuma Street — one of Kyoto's central commercial thoroughfares — is rendered in this 1970 print with Karhu's characteristic attention to the visual layering of facade elements: shop signs, awnings, parked vehicles, and the rhythm of building frontages creating a dense, energetic streetscape. The print belongs to an early phase of his Kyoto street work, before his preference narrowed to the quieter, more traditional neighborhoods of Nishijin and Gion. Karasuma's commercial bustle gives the composition a different energy than his later, more contemplative works.
