A narrow lane at Kiridoshi in Kyoto's hilly eastern districts is Karhu's subject at evening in this 1980 print, the stone steps and wooden fence posts cast in the warm light of the declining day. Kiridoshi — literally "cutting path" — refers to the mountain passes that provided access between Kyoto and the hills to the east, and the lane retains a sense of altitude and remove from the city center. Karhu renders the evening light with the warm tones he reserved for his most intimate Kyoto views.
