Kumadori — the bold red, blue, and black facial makeup of Kabuki theater — is the subject of this 1966 print, its dramatic pattern of lines and colors rendered in Karhu's direct woodblock style during his early Kyoto years. The second in a series (indicated by "II"), the Kumadori prints reflect Karhu's early engagement with the theatrical culture of his adopted city, where Kabuki's visual language was as much a part of everyday life as the architecture of the teahouses and machiya. The graphic intensity of Kumadori makeup translated naturally into the flat, bold color areas of woodblock printing.
