The third Kumadori print in Karhu's early series continues his investigation of Kabuki theatrical makeup as a graphic subject, the bold patterns of colored lines on a white face providing a compositional challenge that suited his direct, flat-color woodblock approach. Made in 1966, during the same period he was exploring figurative, theatrical, and literary subjects alongside his emerging architectural focus, the Kumadori prints demonstrate Karhu's range and his sustained engagement with the full breadth of Kyoto's cultural life.
