Osaka — Japan's commercial capital, architecturally bolder and more energetic than Kyoto — is Karhu's subject in this 1966 print, early in his Japanese career. The city's dense, assertive urban fabric responds to Karhu's eye with a different energy than his quieter Kyoto subjects, and the print reflects both his developing visual vocabulary and the character of a city that has always prided itself on its commercial vitality and architectural informality. The work is an early chapter in a long career of looking at Japanese cities.
