"Space" — made in 1969, as the Apollo program was reaching the moon — is an unusual departure for Karhu, its subject the relationship between built form and open sky rather than the intimate architectural detail that usually occupied him. The print may depict a Kyoto courtyard or interior court opening to the sky, or it may be a more abstract exploration of the spatial relationship between enclosure and openness. Either way, the title suggests that Karhu was, at least in this moment, thinking about his architectural subjects in more explicitly spatial terms.
