Key value factors: As self-carved and self-printed works, sosaku-hanga value is tied to the artist's reputation and edition size. Larger formats, earlier editions, and historically significant works command the highest prices.
The fourth in Kikumaro's series of untitled woodblock prints, this work continues a practice of visual communication unmediated by language. The woodblock process itself involves a form of translation: from drawn design to carved block to printed image, each stage transforming the original conception. Adding a title would impose yet another layer of translation, from image to word. By withholding that final step, Kikumaro preserves the print as a purely visual artifact. The carved and printed surface carries all the information the artist chose to transmit, encoded in line, color, and the physical impression of wood on paper.
