Autumn foliage is among the most celebrated subjects in Japanese art, and Kitaoka approaches it with his characteristic modernist directness — the leaves compressed into bold, flat shapes of red, orange, gold, and still-green, arranged across the picture plane in a dense, nearly abstract pattern. Where traditional Japanese prints rendered autumn leaves with delicate veining and naturalistic gradation, Kitaoka reduces each leaf to its essential color-mass, the accumulation building into a composition of vibrant chromatic energy.
