A grove of trees — their trunks vertical strokes, their canopy a mass of interlocking branches and foliage — is reduced by Kitaoka to its compositional essence: the rhythm of verticals rising into an overhead canopy that filters light. Groves appear repeatedly throughout his work as occasions for studying how the repetition of similar forms creates complex whole effects. This print, simply titled "Grove," suggests a generic rather than specific subject, a meditation on what a grove is and how to render that fundamental quality in the woodblock medium.
