$500–$5,000. Common prints: $500–$1,500. Key value factors: Kitaoka's refined style has a modest but loyal collector base.
The pagoda at Ikaruga — in the precincts of Horyuji Temple in Nara Prefecture, Japan's oldest wooden building complex — is one of the oldest architectural subjects in Japanese art. Kitaoka renders it in the "J" variant of what appears to be a series of pagoda compositions, his geometric treatment giving the five-story structure's successive tiered rooflines and upward taper a bold, compressed clarity. The pagoda's ancient form — unchanged for fourteen centuries — is made present and immediate through the woodblock's capacity for strong, decisive line.
