Gen Yamaguchi renders the Noh actor with attention to the stillness that defines this theatrical form—unlike kabuki's extravagant movement, Noh communicates through controlled gesture, slow pivots, and the subtle tilt of a carved wooden mask. The woodblock medium shares Noh's affinity for restraint and reduction, both arts achieving their effects through what is withheld as much as what is shown. Yamaguchi's carving captures the mask's fixed expression and the robes' heavy drape with quiet precision.
