"Agricultural Scene" depicts the seasonal labor of the Japanese countryside — planting, weeding, harvesting, or some other stage in the cycle of cultivation — rendered through Okuyama's direct, observational sosaku-hanga approach. Where his landscape prints often celebrated the natural world's beauty, his genre scenes of agricultural work honored the human labor that shaped the Japanese countryside. The sosaku-hanga principle of personal artistic vision applied here to subject matter far from the spectacular: the dignity of ordinary seasonal labor.
