Children's Day — the fifth of May (Tango no Sekku) — is depicted through a child wearing or posed with a samurai helmet (kabuto), the traditional decoration associated with this boys' festival. The iron or lacquered helmet, originally a warrior's practical armor, has become one of the most recognizable symbols of the May festival, displayed in households with boys to wish them strength and success. Sadanobu III's composition combines the child's innocent playfulness with the martial symbolism of the helmet in a characteristically Kansai-style print.
