Description
This print depicts a female figure in a hot spring inn interior, a subject Goyo returned to across several compositions during his brief productive period from approximately 1915 to 1921. The onsen setting—a place of leisure and physical ease—gave Goyo license to show his subjects in yukata or in states of relaxed undress that would be implausible in formal urban contexts. The figure likely occupies a room with minimal furnishings, perhaps near a low table or window, the background resolved into geometric planes of neutral color. Goyo's printing technique in works of this type characteristically employs a high number of key blocks and color blocks—sometimes exceeding twenty-five—to capture the volumetric quality of flesh and the specific weight of cotton fabric. The restrained palette, tightly controlled registration, and psychological interiority of the pose are hallmarks of his mature bijin-ga practice.
