Description
Among Goyo's most sustained subjects was the woman in the hot spring inn, a setting he explored across multiple distinct compositions. This print presents a figure in the informal dress of the ryokan—most likely a yukata of striped or subtly patterned cotton—within an interior that emphasizes stillness and quiet comfort. Goyo studied Western oil painting at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts under Kuroda Seiki before turning to woodblock printmaking, and his academic training shaped his approach to figure construction: the body has mass and presence rather than the flattened elegance typical of ukiyo-e bijin-ga. Bokashi gradations across the figure's face and neck create a soft luminosity that sets his skin rendering apart from his contemporaries in the shin-hanga movement. The inn setting, implying a temporary remove from urban life, contributes to the prints' mood of suspended, contemplative privacy.
