$500–$8,000. Common later works: $500–$2,000. Key value factors: Hagiwara's abstract works are collected by both Japanese print and modern art collectors.
Frosty Morning captures the particular atmospheric quality of the coldest clear-weather mornings — the frost crystals on every surface catching the early sun, the air sharp and transparent, the world temporarily made crystalline by the overnight freezing. Hagiwara's carved surfaces, with their capacity to render both the micro-texture of frosted surfaces and the macro-quality of the sharp winter light, were ideally suited to this subject. The frosty morning existed at the intersection of his abstract investigations of surface and his sustained engagement with the atmospheric landscape of the Fuji highlands region.
