$500–$8,000. Common later works: $500–$2,000. Key value factors: Hagiwara's abstract works are collected by both Japanese print and modern art collectors.
Hint of Sunshine (1981–86) captures the particular quality of light when the sun breaks momentarily through heavy cloud cover — the landscape suddenly illuminated from a specific angle, shadows appearing from nowhere on a surface that was uniformly lit a moment before, then fading again as the cloud closes. Hagiwara's treatment of this fleeting lighting effect required the kind of precise color work his multi-block technique enabled, the warmth of the sunlight requiring careful separation from the cooler ambient light of the overcast day around it.
