Description
Ise-Shima National Park — the rugged coastal landscape of the Kii Peninsula, home to Japan's most sacred Shinto shrine and one of its most dramatic coastlines — provided Hagiwara with a subject combining natural grandeur and spiritual significance. The park's landscape of rocky inlets, sea caves, and the island-dotted bay around Ago was also the working environment of the famous ama diving women who had harvested abalone and pearls from these waters for centuries. Hagiwara's print engages the park's combination of wild coastal scenery and living traditional culture.
