$500–$8,000. Common later works: $500–$2,000. Key value factors: Hagiwara's abstract works are collected by both Japanese print and modern art collectors.
Milky Way (1959) — created in the same year as Midnight — extended Hagiwara's investigation of cosmic darkness toward the galaxy's vast, diffuse structure. The Milky Way's characteristic form — a band of concentrated starlight crossing the dark sky — provided his carved woodblock surfaces with a subject where the relationship between individual marks (stars) and overall composition (the galaxy) directly mirrored the relationship between the gouge-strokes of the carving tool and the overall surface they composed. The cosmos as a medium for self-reflection.
