$500–$8,000. Common later works: $500–$2,000. Key value factors: Hagiwara's abstract works are collected by both Japanese print and modern art collectors.
Moorland renders the open, treeless landscape of high moorland — the kind of terrain found in Japan's mountain regions, above the tree line but below the bare rock, covered in grasses, sedge, and low shrubs that turn golden in autumn and white in winter. Hagiwara's treatment of the moorland used his carved surfaces to capture the particular texture of the landscape — neither smooth nor dramatically rough, but endlessly varied in its subtle topography. The moorland's expanse and relative emptiness gave the composition a spaciousness unusual in his more texturally dense work.
