$500–$8,000. Common later works: $500–$2,000. Key value factors: Hagiwara's abstract works are collected by both Japanese print and modern art collectors.
Mount Hiei (比叡) — the sacred mountain northeast of Kyoto that served as the headquarters of Tendai Buddhism and as the spiritual protector of the imperial capital for over a thousand years — presented Hagiwara with one of Japan's most theologically charged landscapes. The mountain's complex of temples (Enryakuji) was burned by Oda Nobunaga in 1571 and later rebuilt, its history of religious, political, and military significance layered beneath the mountain's present forested slopes. Hagiwara renders the mountain as presence rather than panorama, its spiritual weight translated into formal mass.
