$500–$8,000. Common later works: $500–$2,000. Key value factors: Hagiwara's abstract works are collected by both Japanese print and modern art collectors.
Old Castle at Hakone (箱根の古城) renders one of the ruined or aged castle structures that punctuated the Hakone mountain landscape — not the great tenshu of the major castle cities but a smaller fortification, its stones overtaken by vegetation, its walls no longer maintaining their original function. Hagiwara's treatment of the old castle as ruin rather than monument emphasized the processes of time working on the built environment — the castle returning to the landscape that once provided its materials. The combination of historical subject and natural reclamation suited his interests.
