Description

The title describes atmospheric condition rather than locale — a temperate, settled day among the autumn colors. In Hagiwara's compositional logic this suggests a horizontally weighted print, with foliage massed in the middle register and an open, palely keyed sky above, the entire surface unified by the slight haze that signals mild weather. Technically, such subtlety is difficult: the print depends on bokashi gradations across each color block and on the cumulative translucency that results from many separate impressions, with each successive layer slightly modifying the warmth of the layer beneath. The wood grain of the blocks, deliberately allowed to register through the lighter passes, contributes the texture that reads as soft autumn light. The subject continues a current within sosaku-hanga of treating ordinary, untheatrical seasonal weather as a worthy printmaking subject in its own right.
