Description
Seta Ishiyama — the area where the Seta River flows out of the southern end of Lake Biwa through the ancient bridge and past Ishiyamadera temple — was one of the most storied landscapes in Japanese classical culture. The Seta no Karahashi bridge was listed among Japan's three great bridges in the medieval period, and Ishiyamadera's association with The Tale of Genji gave the area its literary depth. Hagiwara renders the Seta landscape with his characteristic attention to the atmospheric conditions of the lake's outlet, the water and stone and ancient trees composing a subject of deep historical resonance.
