$500–$4,000. Common subjects: $500–$1,500. Key value factors: Hirano's prints are relatively accessible compared to other bijin-ga specialists. Condition is important.
Published in January 1932, this [oban](/glossary/oban) woodblock print in ink and color on paper depicts a woman in the moments following a bath. Hirano Hakuho specialized in [bijin-ga](/glossary/bijin-ga) portraits that captured women in intimate, domestic moments rather than formal poses. The post-bath scene is a classic subject in Japanese beauty prints, showing the figure in a relaxed state: hair loosened, skin warm and flushed, clothing reduced to a simple cotton yukata or loosely tied robe. The January publication date contrasts with the implied warmth of the bathing subject, suggesting the particular pleasure of a hot bath during the coldest month of the year. The printer would have used [bokashi](/glossary/bokashi) shading to create the soft gradient of flushed skin tones, applying diluted pigment with a dampened brush along the block's edge to achieve the seamless transition from warm pink to the paper's natural white.
