Description
Tomo no Minato is the historic harbor of Tomonoura, a port town on the Seto Inland Sea in Hiroshima Prefecture, known for its preserved Edo-period townscape and its role in the shipping routes of feudal Japan. Yoshida's print likely depicts the harbor from the water or a vantage point on the hillside above, capturing fishing vessels, stone quays, and the layered silhouettes of traditional buildings ascending the slope. The Seto Inland Sea setting would give Yoshida opportunity for his characteristic water treatment — fine parallel or slightly curved lines building the reflective surface — and for graduated sky passages in cool blue-gray tones. The composition probably incorporates traditional wooden boats moored at the wharf as foreground elements. This print belongs to a body of work documenting historic Japanese coastal towns, where Yoshida's Western sense of tonal atmosphere enriches an essentially Japanese subject.
