Description
The fifth and largest work in Yoshida's Taj Mahal series, this double-oban print depicts the mausoleum emerging from morning mist — the complex half-dissolved in vapor, its minarets receding into white, the dome just barely present above the haze. Yoshida printed this larger-than-standard format specifically to accommodate the horizontal sweep of the Taj complex and its surrounding gardens at the scale the subject demanded. Morning mist was among his most valued atmospheric conditions, allowing him to demonstrate the full range of his gradation technique — layer upon layer of diluted, subtly modulated pigment — in service of a subject whose emotional impact derived entirely from atmosphere rather than architectural detail.
