From the Seto Inland Sea series, this 1926 afternoon print captures traditional wooden sailing vessels navigating the calm waters of the Seto Naikai under a bright mid-day sky — sails fully billowed in the afternoon breeze, the surrounding sea a rich blue broken only by the wakes of passing boats. The Seto Inland Sea, sheltered between Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu, has been Japan's primary maritime corridor for millennia, and its distinctive combination of calm water, pine-covered islands, and working sail traffic gave Yoshida some of his most compositionally satisfying material.
