Description
The evening counterpart to the Seto Inland Sea sailing series, this 1926 print captures traditional sailing vessels at the transitional hour when the afternoon brightness gives way to the warm tones of approaching dusk. The sails, fully extended against the waning light, catch the last direct sun from a low angle while the sea beneath begins the gradual darkening that will eventually resolve into the indigo of full night. Yoshida's ability to render this transitional light — too warm to be afternoon, too bright to be night — through the layered pigments of woodblock printing is a demonstration of his technical mastery. The Seto Inland Sea's characteristic calm made it an ideal setting for compositions centered on this quality of light.
