Description
Among the most atmospheric prints in the Seto Inland Sea series, this 1926 fog composition renders traditional sailing vessels barely visible through thick maritime mist, their hulls and sails present as grey shapes of varying density against a near-white sky and sea that have merged into a single luminous plane. Yoshida considered fog one of the most challenging and rewarding atmospheric conditions for the woodblock medium, since conveying gradations of opacity and depth required extreme control of pigment dilution across multiple printing passes. The Seto Inland Sea, with its warmer waters and sheltered geography, generates distinctive fog conditions that Yoshida had the opportunity to observe directly during his residency on the sea's shores.
