From the Seto Inland Sea Sailing Boats series — among Yoshida's most iconic and sought-after groups. The night and fog/mist variants command the highest premiums within this already valuable series. Sailing Boats: Mist has achieved $7,500 at auction; a set of three variants (Morning, Forenoon, Night) was estimated at GBP 3,000–4,000 at Sotheby's (December 2023). Complete sets of all variants are extremely rare.
Among the most atmospheric prints in the Seto Inland Sea series, this 1926 fog composition renders traditional sailing vessels barely visible through thick maritime mist, their hulls and sails present as grey shapes of varying density against a near-white sky and sea that have merged into a single luminous plane. Yoshida considered fog one of the most challenging and rewarding atmospheric conditions for the woodblock medium, since conveying gradations of opacity and depth required extreme control of pigment dilution across multiple printing passes. The Seto Inland Sea, with its warmer waters and sheltered geography, generates distinctive fog conditions that Yoshida had the opportunity to observe directly during his residency on the sea's shores.
