Funatsu sits on the northern shore of Lake Kawaguchi, one of the Fuji Five Lakes, where the volcano's northern face is mirrored in still water. This print belongs to Yoshida's Fuji jukkei (Ten Views of Fuji) series of 1926, in which he depicted the sacred mountain from ten vantages, seasons, and times of day — a self-conscious extension of the [meisho-e](/glossary/meisho-e) tradition that produced the earlier Fuji series by Hokusai and Hiroshige. Yoshida often issued the same composition in multiple color states, varying the impressions to show morning, daytime, and evening light from a single set of blocks. The Funatsu view typically emphasized the reflective surface of Lake Kawaguchi through extensive [bokashi](/glossary/bokashi) gradation across water and sky. Within his oeuvre, the Fuji series represents one of his most sustained engagements with a single subject and a defining statement of [shin-hanga](/glossary/shin-hanga) ambitions.
