Typical Price

From Yoshida's 32-print India and Southeast Asia series (1930–1931 trip), one of the most internationally adventurous series in shin-hanga. India subjects command a 50–100% premium over comparable Japanese landscapes, driven by their rarity and exotic appeal. The Taj Mahal suite leads this series, with related India prints typically achieving $2,000–$6,500 for jizuri impressions at auction.

  • Jizuri (artist-supervised) seal: $2,000–$6,500
  • Studio/posthumous edition: $600–$2,000

Description

The Outskirts of Agra No. 3 captures the landscape beyond the Mughal capital's formal monuments — the dusty plains, the scattered vegetation, the quality of light on the subcontinent's vast flat terrain. Yoshida's 1932 India series ranged beyond the iconic monuments to the surrounding landscape, applying the same observational rigor to ordinary Indian scenes that he brought to the Taj Mahal. The outskirts of Agra offered subjects of a different register from the mausoleum's perfection: the quotidian India of roads, trees, and open sky.
