Warehouses at Tomonoura, from the series "Inland Sea (Seto naikai)"
Seto naikai

Seto naikai
From the Seto Inland Sea Sailing Boats series — among Yoshida's most iconic and sought-after groups. The night and fog/mist variants command the highest premiums within this already valuable series. Sailing Boats: Mist has achieved $7,500 at auction; a set of three variants (Morning, Forenoon, Night) was estimated at GBP 3,000–4,000 at Sotheby's (December 2023). Complete sets of all variants are extremely rare.
From the Seto Inland Sea series, this 1930 print depicts the historic port town of Tomonoura — a sheltered harbor on the Bingo coast of Hiroshima Prefecture, used as a waystation by vessels navigating the Seto Naikai since ancient times — and specifically focuses on the traditional stone warehouses (kura) that line the waterfront. The whitewashed kura, their thick earthen walls designed to protect goods from fire and humidity, create a distinctive architectural landscape along the harbor that Yoshida renders with attention to the interplay of reflected light on water and the solid, time-worn surfaces of the warehouse walls. The Seto Inland Sea series gave him license to document not just natural scenery but the traditional maritime commercial culture embedded in the landscape.
