Description
This print from Yoshida's American travel series depicts the Washington Monument reflected in the Potomac River, its obelisk form rendered with the precise line and tonal gradation of Japanese woodblock technique. The bilingual title — English and transliterated Japanese — marks it as part of the 'Scenes in America' series Yoshida produced following his 1923 U.S. tour, prints that were sold to Western collectors seeking Japanese aesthetic treatment of familiar landmarks. The obelisk's geometry offered a compositional foil to the horizontal river surface, while the sky and water could carry broad bokashi gradations. Such cross-cultural subjects were central to Yoshida's commercial and artistic identity.
