Description
Distant View of a Torpedo Explosion Seen from Azuma Bridge belongs to Inoue Yasuji's series Famous Places in Tokyo (Tokyo meisho), the project that most fully defines his place within Meiji prints. The composition looks downriver from Azuma Bridge across the Sumida, where a sudden plume of water marks the detonation of a naval torpedo, a public demonstration of the new military technology that periodically punctuated Tokyo's modernizing skyline. Inoue Yasuji, the most disciplined student of Kobayashi Kiyochika, uses the explosion as a structuring device: silhouetted bridge railings, distant rooflines, and small clusters of onlookers anchor the foreground, while the eruption itself is rendered with the rapid [bokashi](/glossary/bokashi) and crisp local highlights characteristic of kosen-ga. The print's interest is less spectacle than spatial measurement. By aligning the spectator with the bridge crowd, the design treats a military spectacle as another civic amenity within the Tokyo Famous Places repertoire, on equal footing with cherry-blossom embankments or moonlit pleasure quarters. The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston preserves this impression, where it is catalogued among the Tokyo meisho sheets that Inoue Yasuji produced before his death in 1889. For students of late nineteenth-century printmaking the sheet is valuable because it documents how Meiji prints absorbed industrial and military subject matter without abandoning the conventions of the meisho tradition. As one of Inoue Yasuji's most discussed Tokyo Famous Places designs, this view remains a touchstone in scholarship on kosen-ga and on the visual culture of the early Meiji capital.
