Description

Gubo-ji Temple at Mama — a small Buddhist institution in the Ichikawa district just east of the city, associated with the ancient poet Ariwara no Narihira — is the subject of this quieter, more rural composition from Yasuji's Tokyo series. The temple's literary associations gave it a special resonance for the city's educated classes, and the village of Mama retained much of its pre-modern character despite its proximity to the expanding metropolis. Yasuji's view captures the temple within its wooded setting, offering a contrast to his many urban streetscapes.
