Description

Ikenohata, the western shore of Shinobazu Pond in the Ueno district, was a fashionable promenade and commercial street adjacent to the Kan'ei-ji temple precinct. A snow scene here would have depicted the wide pond surface frozen or dusted with snow, the bare trees along the embankment and the buildings of the Ikenohata strip reflected in gray winter light. Snow scenes were a demanding test of woodblock printing technique, requiring careful management of the reserve — the unpigmented washi surface — to suggest accumulated snow on rooftops and branches without outlines. Yasuji's treatment likely employs the spare, high-contrast approach of Kiyochika's winter prints, using deep blue-gray shadows against the white of the paper for maximum tonal impact. The winter season reduces the scene to essential forms: the arc of the pond bank, the silhouette of bare trees, and the low buildings of Ikenohata, giving the composition an austerity well suited to the "True Pictures" series' documentary clarity.
