Zenko-ji Temple at Kawaguchi — one of the many satellite temples bearing the name of the famous Nagano pilgrimage site, established to bring the benefits of the great Zenko-ji to worshippers who could not make the long journey — is depicted here within its riverside setting north of Tokyo. The temple served the communities on the northern edge of the metropolitan area, its riverside location giving it a picturesque quality that Yasuji captures with his characteristic attention to the relationship between sacred architecture and natural setting.
