Description
Zojo-ji Temple at Shiba — seen here in another of Yasuji's views of the great Tokugawa funerary complex — shows the temple from a different angle within his documentary survey of this historically significant site. The vast temple precincts, with their layered gates, mausoleum structures, and secondary buildings, offered multiple compositional possibilities, and Yasuji exploited these with his characteristic thoroughness. This view emphasizes the architectural form of the temple buildings within their Shiba district setting, the surrounding city visible beyond the compound walls.
