Kegon Waterfall in watercolor — a study made in the water-based medium that may have preceded or accompanied the woodblock version. Nisaburo, like many shin-hanga artists, worked in multiple media, and watercolor studies allowed rapid capture of a scene's atmospheric and coloristic qualities that would then inform the more labor-intensive woodblock production process. The Kegon Falls watercolor may have been the primary observational document from which the woodblock print was subsequently developed.
