Description
Takao in Autumn — the Takao district in the mountains northwest of Kyoto, famous since the Heian period for its autumn maple viewing. The Kiyotakigawa gorge at Takao and the temples of Jingoji, Saimyoji, and Kozanji set among ancient maples create the classic autumn scene that has drawn visitors for over a millennium. Nisaburo's print captures the dense canopy of Takao's autumn color — the reds and oranges of the mountain maples — set against the architectural forms of the temple buildings and the silvery mountain stream below.
