Description
Ujibashi Bridge — 宇治橋 — is the ancient bridge crossing the Uji River in Uji City, south of Kyoto, one of Japan's oldest and most historically significant bridges. Uji is famous for its tenth-century Byodoin (the Phoenix Temple whose image appears on the ten-yen coin), its production of the finest matcha tea, and the Uji River's role in classical literature — the final chapters of the Tale of Genji are set in this area. Nisaburo's print of the Ujibashi captures the bridge in its setting between the forested riverbanks and the historic city beyond.
